The upcoming period drama by Apple TV+, Lady in the Lake, is making quite the rounds with Natalie Portman fans eagerly awaiting its release. While the show seemingly had a stable start, the production crew and team faced an unexpected obstacle in their schedule. According to multiple reports, the producer of the show received threats. What is Lady in the Lake?

Lady in the Lake is the upcoming drama miniseries. The series takes inspiration from the novel of the same name by renowned author Laura Lippman. The forthcoming series comes from Endeavour Content, created, directed, and executively produced by Alma Harel. Alongside Christopher Legget, the show is under the banner of Alma’s production company, Zusa. Natalie Portman serves as the lead actress as well as one of the executive producers for the show.

The show largely follows the storyline of the book Lady in the Lake. In Baltimore in the 1960s, a motivated investigative journalist, Maddie Schwartz, finds her way to the city of Baltimore to solve a long-standing murder case. The murder of Tessie Fine (an eleven-year-old girl) and Cleo Sherwood (a local bartender) catches her attention. She becomes obsessed with getting to the bottom of the mystery and would do anything to get her answers. Schwartz leaves behind her controlling husband and her lavish home in Pikesville to work on her passion. While in Baltimore, she often clashes with a local black activist whose plan is to further the interests of the black community. 

The highly anticipated period drama got the green light for March 2021. Initially, Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o were set to star in the series. Unfortunately, in May 2022, Nyong’o left the show. Y’lan Noel, Mikey Madison, and Brett Gelman joined the cast in April 2022. After over a year of pre-production, the filming for the series finally began in April as well. Due to Nyong’o’s sudden exit from the show in May, The Queen’s Gambit actress Moses Ingram stepped in to replace her.

Cast

The upcoming series drew quite the attention towards itself mainly due to its leading lady. The team revealed most of the cast members for Lady in the Lake. Although, other actors may join the cast later on as well. Currently, the following actors and actresses are busy filming the series in Baltimore:

In the lead, we have Natalie Portman portraying the role of Maddie Schwartz. She is an investigative journalist adamant about solving the unsolved murder cases in Baltimore. Portman is a famous actress of Israeli descent. Throughout her career, the talented actress delivered numerous blockbuster movies and won multiple accolades. Her role as Evey Hammond in V for Vendetta and a troubled ballerina in Black Swan garnered quite the praise. The latter even led her to win an Academy Award for Best Actress. Portman famously portrayed the role of Jane Foster in Marvel’s Thor franchise.

Moses Ingram joins Natalie to portray the character of Cleo Sherwood, a bartender in Baltimore. Moses is a new and upcoming actress who managed to make quite the mark for herself in a short period. She portrayed the character of Jolene in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. She even received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for this role. Moses also appreciated her role as Reva Sevander/ the Third Sister in Obi-Wan Kenobi (a Disney+ miniseries).

Further joining the cast is Y’lan Noel as Ferdie. Noel is a Panamanian-American actor popularly known for portraying the character of Daniel King in Insecure (an HBO TV series). He also famously starred in the 2018 horror movie, The First Purge. 

Mikey Madison plays the character of Judith. Madison is an American actress best known for her role as Max Fox in the comedy-drama show, Better Things. She also received recognition for her role as Amber Freeman in the 2022 Scream movie and Susan “Sadie” Atkins in the 2019 film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. 

Ronnie Gene Blevins portrays the character of Officer Bosko in the upcoming miniseries. We also have Brett Gelman, Noah Jupe, and Mike Epps joining the cast of Lady in the Lake. Furthermore, Bryon Bowers, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Josiah Cross also join the cast. However, the exact roles of all these actors remain unknown. Viewers would have to wait to learn more about these characters’ roles in the highly anticipated period drama series. 

Sudden Hault to Filming, Following Threats to Producer

Filming for Lady in the Lake began in April 2022 in the outskirts of Baltimore. Apart from some delays due to Nyong’o leaving the cast, the production for the series seemed to be going relatively smoothly. Unfortunately, on Friday, 26th August 2022, filming came to an unexpected halt following threats towards the team. The Baltimore police department told NBC News that some locals reached out to the show’s producers during the shoot at Park Avenue at 4 pm on Friday. As per reports, the local group threatened the producers with violence if they refused to pay them $50,000.

The group threatened to return in the evening and shoot someone if they resumed production without paying the $50,000. Fearful of the treat, the staff chose to “err on the side of caution” and halted filming. As per reports, before the cast and crew arrived on set, two men held one of the drivers at gunpoint. Nevertheless, after threatening the driver, the two soon fled the scene.

Many thought that the threat would cause significant delays in filming. However, luckily filming resumed the very next day -although at a different location. According to the producers, the team works closely with the Baltimore Police Department to ensure adequate security measures.
