Law & Order isn’t changing its format, even after all this time. According to NBC, the show will preserve its divided design from its first run and stick to the basic premise of following the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the criminals.
It should also be emphasized that this is not a reboot but rather a continuation of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s original run, which is why the new season is referred to as season 21, and many of the show’s original cast members are returning

Fans will be pleased to see a lot of familiar names and some new ones among the “Law & Order” season 21 cast. Two actors have already been confirmed: Sam Waterston will resume his role as District Attorney Jack McCoy (in his 17th season on the program), and Anthony Anderson will reprise his role as Detective Kevin Bernard. Lieutenant Kate Dixon, played by Camryn Manheim, is another returning cast member.
Some new faces have joined the“Law & Order” season 21 cast, including Waterston, Anderson, and Manheim. Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) has joined the cast as an NYPD detective, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) has landed a role as an assistant district attorney, and Odelia Halevi (Good Trouble) has joined the cast as Assistant District Attorney Samantha Maroun.
