Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Release Date, Cast and What to Expect

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been one of the most-awaited films and has been in the news for a long time. The fourth instalment in Paramount’s family-friendly franchise is now in active production and is officially confirmed for theatrical release on March 19, 2027.

Joined by Tails and Knuckles, the latest instalment will mark the return of Jeff Fowler as the director.

When Will Sonic 4 Release?

Sonic 4 is scheduled for theatrical release on March 19, 2027. The date was officially announced shortly after Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premiered in December 2024. While the previous instalment was a Christmas release, the fourth instalment might follow the pattern of the second film, which was released in spring. It has to be recalled that the first film premiered in February 2020.

What Could The Sonic 4 Plot Be?

Paramount has not yet shared any official plot details for Sonic 4. The following are popular fan theories and speculation based on Sonic 3’s mid- and post-credits scenes, recent production teases, and unused concepts from earlier films.

For the uninitiated, Sonic 3 ended with Team Sonic—Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Tom, and Maddie—surviving, while Robotnik appears to perish in the Eclipse Cannon explosion (though his fate remains ambiguous in the franchise). However, the story didn’t completely end there, as the mid-credits scene introduced a new character, Amy Rose, and several Metal Sonics, and post-credits scene showed that Shadow survived the final battle. Although the snippet doesn’t reveal Shadow’s face, he was shown picking up one of his gold wrist cuffs from a crater.

So, Sonic 4 might focus on Sonic’s battle against the mechanical army? Amy Rose could be on his side, but we wonder about Shadow? Even though Shadow was an antagonist for most of the third movie, he helped Sonic save the world in the end. It has to be seen whether he continues to be a hero in the next movie!

Previously, writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller had revealed to GamesRadar+ that Amy Rose almost had a bigger role in Sonic 3, not just the mid-credits scene, and that they have an exciting plan for her in the future.

And then there’s Robotnik! Some leaked concept art from Sonic 3’s development showed unused ideas involving parallel universes, time travel, and an “Emperor Eggman” design alongside Metal Sonic. Fans speculate whether elements of these scrapped concepts might inspire parts of Sonic 4, though nothing has been confirmed.

While Sonic 3 was a loose adaptation of the video game, it is possible that Sonic 4, too, will continue the trend of movies inspired by the games. The appearance of Metal Sonic could hint that the series is moving toward Sonic CD’s story (1993), where Sonic traveled through time to stop a ‘bad future’ controlled by Eggman and Metal Sonic.

Paramount has not released a full official cast list yet, but the following actors are expected to return in their roles: Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski.
New confirmed additions include Kristen Bell voicing Amy Rose and Ben Kingsley in a major undisclosed role. Jim Carrey has also expressed interest in reprising Dr. Robotnik.
