Doctor Who fans around the world have been treated by the BBC and Disney+ as they recently released the first-look teaser for Doctor Who Season 2, a science fiction television series by Ncuti Gatwa. The teaser arrived after the annual Christmas special, Joy To The World and it gave a glimpse of a new batch of episodes featuring Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Varada Sethu as the new TARDIS companion, Belinda Chandra. The debut of Varada Sethu was made in Season 1’s episode Boom, in which she played Mundy Flynn. The teaser also found Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor still traveling alone after he separated from his companion, Ruby Sunday. So, let’s discuss in this article, what the first-look teaser of Doctor Who Season 2 tells further about the upcoming installment.
Varada Sethu Will Be Coming In Doctor Who Season 2 As A New Companion
The recently released first-look teaser of Doctor Who Season 2 shows that Varada Sethu will be appearing in the upcoming season as a TARDIS companion, Belinda Chandra. The actress is already known to the viewers as she appeared in Season 1’s episode Boom, written by Steven Moffat. But in this, she appeared as Mundy Flynn. Since the teaser was released, fans have been wondering will the two characters be related. But this will be only answered when Season 2 gets released.
The teaser shows that in Season 2, Belinda will be the Doctor’s main companion while Ruby Sunday will appear in fewer scenes. Steven Moffat and Russell T. Davies have previously hinted that Varada will play a new role in Season 2, but have not revealed the details. However, the teaser shows that the Doctor is having trouble taking Belinda Chandra back to her own time and place in the universe. The synopsis of the show states that after the Doctor’s 1st meeting with Belinda Chandra, the upcoming season will see him go on a journey to get her back to Earth and a powerful force will come in their way. This confirms that there will be something very powerful that will try to keep the Doctor and Belinda away from their home.
Unified Intelligence Taskforce Will Be Back Along With Ruby Sunday
The 30-second teaser of Doctor Who Season 2 revealed that while Belinda Chandra will be the center of attraction, Ruby Sunday will also be back. In the teaser, she is seen along with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Shirley Anne Bingham. This means Jemma Redgrave and Ruth Madeley will also be returning. In addition, this also confirms that the Unified Intelligence Taskforce or UNIT will also be coming back. This is an Earth-based military organization that was last seen in Season 1’s finale episode, Empire of Death, and dealt with extra-terrestrial activities. Because Ruby and Doctor separated in Season 1, it’s not clear how will she return to the Doctor’s life in Season 2 but because she was a former companion of the Doctor, she will now be working with the UNIT. As the old friends of the Doctor, the UNIT often takes the former companions of the DOCTOR to help protect Earth from its enemies.
Mrs. Flood Will Also Come Back In Doctor Who Season 2
The teaser of Doctor Who Season 2 has also revealed that the mysterious neighbor of Ruby Sunday, Mrs Flood played by Anita Dobson, will be coming back. The character of Mrs Flood has spoken to the audience directly many times. In the finale episode of Season 1, she looked into the camera and said to the audience that the Doctor’s story ends in absolute terror. This implies that the neighbor might have some really important information. Therefore, this makes the character of Mrs Flood one of the most important.
Belinda And The Doctor Will Be Standing Up Against Their Enemies
In Season 1 of Doctor Who the protagonist faced many gods and enemies such as the Toymaker, the Goblins, the Toymaker’s child Maestro, the God of Death Sutekh, and many more. All these made surprise entries in Season 1 and it looks like Season 2 will surely continue the storyline of the Doctor standing up against more gods. The teaser released recently shows that the Doctor gives a warning, “There are forces beyond this universe. It’s all a game to them.” In the last season, a similar warning was given to Ruby.
But now, it seems he is warning Belinda as they both get ready to stand up against their enemies. Further, in the teaser, a big cartoon character can be seen coming out of a film screen. Fans have found it similar to the reality-changing power of gods such as Maestro and the Toymaker. Also, the teaser shows a futuristic world under attack by some retro-style flying saucers and 2 big red robots with happy and unhappy faces abducting Belinda. While the robots seem to be a mystery, but they might not be good news for the Doctor and his new companion.
This Might Be The Long Way Around
In the recently released teaser of Doctor Who Season 2, the Doctor says the line, “This Might Be The Long Way Around,” which gives the fans a flashback of Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. A similar phrase was used by the Eleventh Doctor in the 50th Anniversary Special when he talks about taking the long way around to come back to his home in Gallifrey. In the latest teaser, the Fifteenth Doctor says the same phrase to his new companion Belinda who asks him to take her home.
Doctor Who Season 2 Might Release Sometime In 2025
As of now, the release date of Doctor Who Season 2 has not been confirmed, but it is expected that it will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2025. Season 1 of the show was released in mid-May 2024, so this implies, that viewers should expect the next season to come out in late 2025. While promoting the annual Christmas Special, Joy To The World, Russell T. Davies stated that Season 2 will arrive sooner than viewers might think. Also, he has mentioned that the upcoming season will come up on BBC and BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ outside of the UK.
