He helped his school’s soccer team win the state championship. Additionally, he was highly academic, earning straight As in honours pre-calculus.

Brendan Whitworth Career

During his college years at Bucknell University, Whitworth’s passions and interests began to shift. He found himself drawn to military and government service. Whitworth’s admiration for the military and patriotism led him to make a significant decision. Midway through his college career, he had a change of heart and decided to pursue a career in the United States Marine Corps. He set his sights on attending Officer Candidate School (OCS).

Whitworth’s dedication paid off, as he completed OCS and was commissioned as a lieutenant in his senior year. Whitworth explained in an interview that his grandfather’s work at the FBI was a significant factor in his decision to pursue a career in the military and later join the CIA. His grandfather’s career at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), serving under President Hoover, before running the training in Quantico, Virginia, had a significant impact on Whitworth’s life.

At the age of 25, stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, Whitworth was already making headlines as an Ironman. He completed the Marine Corp Marathon in a remarkable two hours and 55 minutes and qualified for the Ironman World Championship, an ultra-triathlon held annually in Hawaii.

Despite his success as an athlete, Whitworth’s dedication to serving his country led him to make a difficult decision. He left the Marines after three years and joined the CIA. In the aftermath of 9/11, from 2001-2006, Whitworth worked in some of the most challenging locations around the globe at the height of the War on Terror, including Pakistan, Tunisia, and Iraq.

While Brendan’s family was proud of his service to the country, they were also concerned for his safety and well-being. Whitworth’s older sister Kelty, who was herself an All-American swimmer at Ursuline Academy in Delaware and had attended Harvard, was particularly vocal about her worries. According to Whitworth, Kelty urged him to prioritize himself and his future rather than continue to put himself in harm’s way.

Initially, Whitworth was reluctant to leave the CIA. However, he eventually agreed to do so on the condition that he would attend Harvard, like his sister. He began preparing for his Graduate Management Admission Test while still in Baghdad. He had to study late at night after his CIA shifts ended.

In 2006, Whitworth arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to pursue his MBA at Harvard Business School. He continued to play sports, particularly rugby but focused primarily on his studies.

After graduation, Whitworth landed a job with PepsiCo and quickly rose through the ranks. He eventually joined AB-Inbev, a Belgian-based brewing company. Here he continued to excel, leading trade marketing, category, and sales technology divisions. In November 2017, he became the US Chief Sales Officer, and eventually, the US CEO.
