Take this news with a pinch of salt, but The Sandman Season 2 is not returning anytime before 2025.
Will There be Season 2 for The Sandman?
The Sandman was well received by the audience, averaging a score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes by viewers. It premiered in August, 2022. Thus, it’s about the time the new season gets released.
Unfortunately, the Executive Producer, Neil Gaiman, has been rather vocal, through Twitter, on the black lads the show received upon talks about its renewal. Especially since Netflix’s data collection suggested that people were not binge-watching the show: instead, they were taking their time to absorb the complicated story. It is unlike the trend Netflix aims to set. Nonetheless, The Sandman secured a spot as the Global Top 10 show after its release.
Thus, it is no surprise that Netflix renewed The Sandman Season 2.

The Sandman Season 2 Release Date
The CGI-heavy fantasy series will certainly take longer to film and edit. Thus, no official release date has been announced yet. Given that the first season took two years of filming, it’s rough speculation that the second one might take the same time, if not longer. Also, since the show requires major edits and filming with CGI, the current SAG-AFTRA strikes are also not helping.
According to several sources, the filming began prior to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The script was also simultaneously penned down, and production began in June 2023. The show was initially scheduled for release in August 2024. But we do not see that happening at all, given the current strikes. Initially, Peter Friedlander, the head of Netflix USA and Canada, planned to put out new content in batches instead of a complete The Sandman Season 2. Niel Gaiman and actor Mason Alexander Park also confirmed the news. Unfortunately, the strikes will significantly push the release date for The Sandman Season 2.

The Sandman Season 2 Plotline

Executive producer Neil Gaiman’s comic series for DC Comics is the main source material for the show. The plot line for The Sandman Season 2 will most probably follow the comics from January 1989 to March 1996. Although, like most showmakers, changes to the series will be undertaken to make it less predictable. In The Sandman Season 2, Dream Country will be explored further. Additionally, the fourth and fifth collections of the comics’ storyline shall be followed. They’re called Season of Mists and A Game of You.
Season of Mists
Season 2 will evolve into an epic with larger-than-life visuals and spectacular twists. Reportedly, in the fourth comic book, Seasons of Mists, Lucifer renounces his throne, and its authority is handed over to Morpheus. Thus, the decision is pending as to who will be the next ruler of Hell. An interesting development for The Sandman Season 2.
A Game of You
Finally, the last part of the series explores the plot line of a new character that is Barbie, played by Lily Travers. Barbie is the tenant with Rose Walker and they live in Florida. In the next season, Barbie will have a strong confrontation with the powerful villain Cuckoo who possesses power in both the dream world and the real world. Barbie must fight off the villain with her fantastical side-kick Martin Tenbones played by Lenny Henry, and her trans best friend, Wanda, played by Alvin Mann. Finally, there’s a massive probability that in the new season, only the fourth collection that is Season of Mists, will be explored.
The Sandman Season 2 Cast
For now, the information of confirmed cast members includes Tom Sturridge playing Lord Morpheus, AKA Dream, and Death, played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste She’s part of the Endless. Another Endless member, Desire, is played by Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston plays Despair, and the glorious Gwendoline Christie plays Lucifer Morningstar. Confirmed cast members include Lucien, played by Vivienne Acheampong, and Patton Oswalt, playing Mathew the Raven. Supporting cast members include Eddie Karanja, Jenna Coleman playing Johanna Constantine, Razane Jammal, and Vanesu Samunyai.
